Soup’s On with Viraj x LARP x La Casa Latina: Ana Caballero of Proyecto Tamal

What:

Soup’s On with Viraj x Harnwell’s Latin American Residential Program (LARP) x La Casa Latina

present

Ana Caballero of Philadelphia’s Proyecto Tamal

House Director Viraj Patel’s signature Soup’s On program explores our complex and evolving relationships with food, including cultural hxstories, food justice, community organizing, and more. This semester, join Viraj as we explore different food justice initiatives, and ways we can contribute respectfully and meaningfully as Penn students, in Philadelphia.

This upcoming week, Soup’s On is partnering with the Latin American Residential Program (LARP) and La Casa Latina to welcome local community organizer, businessperson, and all around amazing individual Ana Caballero. Ana started Proyecto Tamal following depopulation and shutdown in the face of the COVID pandemic when restaurant workers in Philadelphia began losing their jobs with nowhere to turn. Ana and Proyecto Tamal partner each week with a different chef, relying on support from local businesses to host their ordering platform, supply donations, and kitchen space in order to support a team making over 1,500 tamales each week (and they sell out FAST!!). We’ll have a chance to hear Ana share more about her background, experience as a community organizer and process for developing Proyecto Tamal, and what’s on the horizon when the program ends at the end of February. We’ll have some light facilitated discussion and Q&A as well.

Please email Viraj Patel at pviraj@upenn.edu for more information. If you are a Harnwell resident, you have received an invidation/RSVP info via the Harnwell listserv.
