Guatemala Health Initiative Info Session (ANTH 402)

What:

The Guatemala Health Initiative(GHI) partners with health and education institutions in Guatemala to provide mutually beneficial opportunities in global health and development. GHI runs a spring break trip for Penn students, a Penn course ANTH 402, and a summer field experience. The course is designed to teach about doing research in resource-limited environments like Guatemala or West Philadelphia. Students in the course travel to Guatemala over spring break to apply course concepts “on the ground” in Santiago Atitlan. Selected students (usually 6-8)  are invited to spend 10 weeks in Guatemala over the summer doing research with the community of Santiago Atitlan. The research centers around topics related to community concerns. Most recently those concerns include diabetes and nutrition related problems. We have also had students travel to Guatemala for the 10 week program without taking the course. Freshmen and sophomores are eligible to apply for a PURM (provost’s undergraduate research mentoring award) which could support you for much of the 10 week program. For the 10 week program, you need to be able to communicate in Spanish. Financial aid eligible students receive support as part of registration in the class ANTH 402 and ANTH 403. This information session will discuss the GHI program including spring break, the course, and summer field work.
