Room Selection for the 2016-2017 Academic Year

The Room Selection process is managed by the Assignments Office of Residential Services in collaboration with the individual College Houses.  The information below has been culled from their website and supplemented with details unique to Harnwell.

There are THREE separate processes: Residential Program, In-House, and Inter-House.

Residential Program Process: January 14 - January 29, 2016
In-House Process: February 1 - February 11, 2016
Inter-House Process: February 15 - February 25, 2016

Timeline: January 14 - January 29, 2016

Apply online at myhomeatpenn.upenn.edu starting at 9:00 AM on Thursday, January 14.  The deadline to apply is 5:00 PM on Tuesday, January 19.  Students can expect information pertaining to their application to become available on Friday, January 29, 2016.

Please note that all applicants are required to respond to the following questions in an essay using a maximum of 500 words:

        Why are you interested in joining this Residential Program?

        What would your involvement bring to this program’s overall experience?

        How have you participated in your current House community?

Applications will be reviewed by Harnwell Senior Staff and RAGAs affiliated with the Ancient Studies Program. In order for an application to be seriously considered, it is highly encouraged that the essay reflects the uniqueness of the Program. If needed, Harnwell Senior Staff and RAGAs reserve the right to reach out to applicants clarifying room requests and additional concerns.

IN-HOUSE PROCESS - UNIQUE TO HARNWELL
[NOTE: OUR POINT SYSTEM DOES NOT PERTAIN TO OTHER COLLEGE HOUSES]

In order to participate in the In-House process for an assignment in Harnwell, at least 50% of the rooming group must be living in Harnwell during Spring 2016.

Timeline:
• Wednesday, January 20: HARNWELL Room Selection Info Session at 6:30 pm in the RTL
• Monday, February 1: In-House Process application available at 9:00 AM on myhomeatpenn.upenn.edu.
• Wednesday, February 3: In-House Process application deadline at 5:00 PM.
• Friday, February 5: In-House Process selection timeslots emailed to group captains in the afternoon.
• Monday, February 8: In-House priority room selection begins (timeslots).
• Wednesday, February 10: In-House priority room selection ends. In-House general room selection begins at 6:30 PM.
• Thursday, February 11: In-House general room selection ends at 5:00 PM.

Main features:
• Applicants apply in groups of 1 to 4 students and nominate a captain for their group who must be a current Harnwell house resident as well as available to select a room during the selection dates/times.  Note at least 50% of the members of each group must reside in Harnwell and all group members must register with the same gender (female, male, or gender neutral).
• The captain applies online first at myhomeatpenn.upenn.edu and creates the group.  Group members then apply at myhomeatpenn.upenn.edu and join the group.  The captain returns to the site to verify the group.
• For each semester that a resident has lived in Harnwell, he or she will receive a set number of points.  Non-resident group members have 0 points, even if they lived in Harnwell during a prior academic year.
• Other points for Harnwell activity for 2015-2016 (not cumulative from past years) will also be given (see below).
• The score for the group will be the average of the scores for each resident in the group.
• Selection for rooms will begin with the highest scores.  Groups with the same point total will be randomized to determine the order of selection.
• A selection date and time will be emailed to the captain by Residential Services.
• The captain selects the room for the group members.

Harnwell Point System:

  • Harnwell residents: 5 points for each semester of residency in Harnwell
  • Harnwell Managers, if appointed for next year by in-house time: 12 for the full year, dependent on good standing
  • Royal Council (i.e., student governance): 2 each semester, up to 4 for the full year, pending senior staff approval
  • Eco Reps: 2 each semester, up to 4 for the full year, pending senior staff approval
  • Other Harnwell House Employees, must reside in Harnwell: 1 each semester, up to 2 points for the year, dependent on  good standing
  • Harnwell ITA, must reside in Harnwell: 1 each semester, up to 2 points for the year, dependent on  good standing

Please note: All point totals will be capped at 40.  40 points is the maximum allowed by Residential Services across the system.

Verify your points for the In-House Process by completing this form no later than noon on Thursday, February 4th.  A member of the Harnwell staff will review your submission and contact you if there are any discrepancies between your self-reported points and our calculations.

INTER-HOUSE PROCESS—APPLIES TO ALL COLLEGE HOUSES

Timeline:
• Monday, February 15: Inter-House Process application available at 9:00 AM on myhomeatpenn.upenn.edu.
• Wednesday, February 17: Inter-House Process application deadline at 5:00 PM.
• Friday, February 19: Inter-House Process selection timeslots emailed in the afternoon.
• Monday, February 22: Inter-House priority room selection begins.
• Wednesday, February 24: Inter-House priority room selection ends at 5:00 PM.  Inter-House general room selection begins at 6:30 PM.
• Thursday, February 25: Inter-House general room selection ends at 5:00 PM.

Main features:
Open to all eligible undergraduates.  Applicants apply in groups of 1 to 4 students and nominate a captain for their group who must be available during the room selection dates/times.  Note that all group members must register with the same gender (female, male, or neutral).
