Piano Usage

Harnwell Piano Policies and Operations:

GRAND PIANOS:

  1. GRAND PIANO on loan from the Music Department in the Rooftop Lounge (RTL)--or Penthouse of Harnwell; used only for performances -- available for limited rehearsals before a recital or if enrolled in a chamber music performance class. Students must come to the House Office at least 4 weeks before a performance to be added to the schedule and make arrangements for tuning.
  2. GRAND PIANO (Harnwell's own Steinway) for regular practice in the Dungeon, LL13: Priority goes to College House Music Program Instructors who are teaching lessons in the House. Students who want to be on an access letter for the room must meet with the Harnwell House Dean. Students must go to the Information Center to check out the key. A student must lock the room after he or she is finished. Musicians wishing to practice instruments other than the piano should practice in LL12.  Hours may be limited during Dungeon performances. No food or drink in the room. Stands, benches, and chairs should be left in the room. The piano lid should be closed and the keyboard covered after use.  When the room is not reserved, the key may be checked out by individuals for 90 minutes at a time through the Info Center.  After 90 minutes, the key must be checked in and may only be checked out again by the original party if there are no other authorized users of the room waiting to use the space.

UPRIGHT PIANOS:

  1. Dungeon, LL12: one upright piano in reasonable shape. Open to all Harnwell residents who would like to use a practice room.  Students must go to the Information Center to check out the key. A student must lock the room after he or she is finished. This room is also available for other instrumentalists and singers to practice whether or not they actually play the piano. Hours may be limited during Dungeon performances. No food or drink in the room. Stands, benches, and chairs should be left in the room.  When the room is not reserved, the key may be checked out for 90 minutes at a time through the Info Center.  After 90 minutes, the key must be checked in and may only be checked out again by the original party if nobody else is waiting to use the room.
  2. RTL: limited hours, but offsets use of the grand piano; okay for casual performances but not formal recitals; NO practicing during the quiet hours posted near the piano or during other scheduled events in the RTL. During hours outside these times (morning and late afternoon) musicians must ask others in the room whether they are being disturbed.
  3. A Cappella Practice Room, on the Upper Lobby level: This room is intended to serve as a space for a cappella vocal rehearsals.  All Harnwell residents will have access to this room by checking the key from the Information Center. Musicians who are not pianists are encouraged to use this room. No food or drink in the room. When the room is not reserved, the key may be checked out for 90 minutes at a time through the Info Center.  After 90 minutes, the key must be checked in and may only be checked out again by the original party if nobody else is waiting to use the room.
  4. Lobby: one upright piano in excellent condition intended for spontaneous music-making.  Staff members in Harnwell (including Info Center, Allied Barton, RA, GA, and Senior Staff) have the right to silence this piano when needed.  This piano has a 15-minute rule: after another party requests to use the piano, you have 15 minutes to finish your piece and relinquish your seat on the bench.  Please keep all liquids and destructive substances away from this piano.  Time on this piano is not reservable; regular lessons and rehearsals (outside of Harnwell Ukulele Nites or other house events) are not scheduled.
