“Of such wisdom, the poetic passion, the desire of beauty, the love of art for its own sake, has most. For art comes to you proposing frankly to give nothing but the highest quality to your moments as they pass, and simply for those moments’ sake.”
– Walter Pater
How often do you experience moments as inspired by art? In all of arts’ iterations and all the ways in which we engage with art, we can quickly lose track of those essential moments. As residents of Arts House Residential Program, you will continue to be advocates of the arts. This call challenges residents to be more than consumers of the arts, and will create opportunities to experience, philosophically contemplate, and showcase art in your campus home.
By experiencing highlights of Philadelphia’s artistic offerings, such as Opera on the Mall, First Friday gallery openings, The Philadelphia Orchestra, and theater performances, Arts House can engage with and think about the process and presentation of artistic endeavors. Each spring semester, residents model those experiences with the annual Arts House Gallery Opening, which features local artists – visual, musical, performance – in Harnwell’s gallery and theater spaces.
This program is well-suited for the student who takes initiative, is dedicated to the mission of art advocacy, and is seeking intellectual and personal growth.
Apply online at myhomeatpenn.upenn.edu starting at 9:00 AM on Wednesday, January 17, 2018. The deadline to apply is 12:00 PM on Monday, January 22, 2018. Students can expect information pertaining to their application to become available on Monday, January 29, 2018.
For more detailed information on the Residential Program application and process please visit this page on the Residential Services website or plan to attend our Information Session on Tuesday, January 16 at 9:00 PM in McClelland South Lounge. Please note that all applicants are required to respond to the following questions in an essay using a maximum of 500 words:
Why are you interested in joining this Residential Program?
What would your involvement bring to this program’s overall experience?
How have you participated in your current House community?
Applications will be reviewed by Harnwell Senior Staff and RAGAs affiliated with the Arts House Program. In order for an application to be seriously considered, it is highly encouraged that the essay reflects the uniqueness of the Program. If needed, Harnwell Senior Staff and RAGAs reserve the right to reach out to applicants clarifying room requests and additional concerns.
As part of the selection process, Arts House highly recommends participation in an audition/interview. Participation will result in preference to the program and requested room type (when applicable). It is a short, 10-minute performance (singing, dancing, reading, etc.), or portfolio (visual and digital media), or presentation (topics about your interest in art). These will take place over the evenings of January 24-26, 2018. These auditions/interviews are a chance for Arts House to gauge interest, dedication, and appreciation of the arts – this is not a talent contest.
