PA Superior Court Arguments

What:

I will be offering a trip to the Pennsylvania Superior Court's argument sitting for October. This is a link to the cases that will be argued that day, beginning at 9 AM (see second page).

I will be allowing sign-ups for 10 people from the 4th floor for now, with the option of a total of 15 if there is interest from other floors in collaborating on this event. These slots may be reallocated depending on interest.

See here for a sign up sheet.

The Pennsylvania Superior Court is one of two intermediate court of appeals in the state, meaning that it hears appeals from local criminal and civil courts throughout the state of Pennsylvania, with the exception of cases involving some state agencies and some kinds of cases where the state government is a civil party.

The courthouse where this set of arguments will be happening is located at 17th Floor, 530 Walnut St., Philadelphia. I will see with the house office about the possibility of setting up residents with SEPTA tokens to travel from campus to the argument site. While things may change, expect us to meet at 8:00 AM in the lobby and take the train from 40th Street Station to 5th Street Independence Hall station, and walk to the courthouse from there.

NOTES:

  • Expect airport style security (metal detectors) on the way in.
  • While as observers in the courtroom there is no "enforced" dress code, business casual would be ideal (think for men: slacks and button down shirt) and that is what I will be wearing. As an idea of the environment, all lawyers who are arguing before the court that day will likely wear suits.
  • Watching this will be a great opportunity for those who are interested in law school or "the law" to see how appellate practice works. I look forward to seeing at least some of you there.

When:

Wednesday October 17th, 2018 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM
