East Asia House
(Floor 10)

Application: doc | pdf

East Asia House is a unique residential program which provides Penn students the opportunity to live in an active and socially responsible community united by a common interest in East Asian, South-East Asian, and more broadly, Asian American culture. EAH members come from all walks of life . from different majors at Penn, and different cities, states, and countries in the world. Thus, not all EAH members are Asian, but each member embodies a different representation and interpretation of Asian America at large.

East Asia House serves the social, intellectual, and culinary needs of its residents by sponsoring off-campus day trips, inviting guest speakers, and holding regular lunch and dinner events. Past activities have included visits to the Museum of Metropolitan Art in New York, participation in sushi-making workshops, and regular Sunday dim-sum lunches in Chinatown. Furthermore, the diverse EAH living environment also facilitates student collaboration in the form of language study groups, literary publications, and musical performances.

This year, we are taking part in social floor meetings over Thai food, potluck get-togethers, bubble tea outings, a banquet for the Mid-Autumn Fesitval, karaoke in Koreatown, dim sum trips, a Dance Dance Revolution competion, Japanese, Chinese, and Vietnamese language groups, a guided visit to the Philadelphia Museum of Art's Asian art exhibits, and a trip to New York's Chinatown. We have also established ongoing programs for graduate school mentoring, math tutoring, group study sessions, language chats, and Adopt-a-Frosh mentoring. In the spring, we host the university's largest celebration of Lunar New Year, bringing together various campus-wide cultural and performance arts groups.

EAH participants receive single or shared apartments (up to four residents, each with his or her own single room) with scenic views from the 10th floor of Harnwell College House. They enjoy special amenities not available to all floors such as laundry facilities, and a private lounge with piano and television. Finally, they also enjoy membership in a greater Harnwell community teeming with social and academic resources of its own.
